How you apply perfume affects how you experience it throughout the day. Skin hydration, amount, application points, temperature and even the habit of rubbing your wrists can change the result.
More product does not automatically mean better performance. Good application balances presence, comfort and context.
1. Start with clean, moisturised skin
Very dry skin can hold some aromas less effectively. An unscented moisturiser can create a more even base without interfering with the fragrance.
2. Spray from a comfortable distance
Spraying too close concentrates the liquid in one small area. Around 15 to 20 cm usually allows a more even distribution.
3. Choose useful application points
Neck
A light application on the side can create presence without placing too much scent directly under your nose.
Forearms
Easy to control and useful for following the fragrance as it develops.
Nape
Can help create a more discreet scent trail as you move.
Clothing
Can retain fragrance longer, but test first on delicate or light fabrics.
4. Avoid rubbing your wrists
Rubbing changes distribution and can speed up the evaporation of more volatile notes. After spraying, let the fragrance dry naturally.
5. Adjust the amount to the perfume and environment
There is no universal number of sprays. A fresh scent may tolerate a different application from a dense oriental. An enclosed room also calls for more restraint than an outdoor setting.
- Work and office: start light and assess projection in the space.
- Heat: reduce the amount of dense, sweet or heavily spiced fragrances.
- Cold: you may need to adjust because evaporation behaves differently.
- Night and events: match intensity to proximity and venue size.
6. Be aware of olfactory adaptation
After some time, you may stop noticing the fragrance as strongly even while other people can still smell it. Keep this in mind before reapplying.
7. Storage matters too
Direct light, heat and major temperature swings are not ideal for perfume. Store the bottle somewhere dry, protected from light and at a relatively stable temperature.

Application and fragrance family
Fresh and luminous profiles are often easy during the day. Oriental or gourmand profiles may need more control in enclosed spaces.
On the first wear of a new fragrance, start moderately. It is easier to increase next time than to correct over-application.

Does perfume last longer on clothes?
Some fabrics retain scent for longer, but results vary and some fragrances may mark delicate materials. Test on a discreet area first.
Can I apply perfume to my hair?
Avoid applying large amounts directly to the scalp. If you want to scent your hair, use a very light application and consider individual sensitivity.
How many sprays should I use?
There is no universal number. Concentration, formula, temperature and environment all affect the right amount.
Why do I stop smelling my own perfume?
Your nose can adapt to the scent. That does not necessarily mean the fragrance has disappeared.
